The exceptional characteristics of Mono\u00ef de Tahiti were officially recognized in April 1992 by the Denomination of Origin and became a guarantee of authenticity and quality. This distinction is limited to products produced in French Polynesia according to local and constantly verified manufacturing processes: Gardenia taitensis (flower of Polynesia, also called Tiare Tahiti) is soaked in refined coconut oil. The guarantee resulting from this initiative has contributed to the fact that today 90 % of mono\u00ef comply with current legislation.
