But what makes Anakena Beach so special are the moai, which stand here as well—with their backs to the sea—on a stone platform called an ahu. Some of them wear a headdress—called a „pukao“—made of red tuff containing iron oxide. This exceptionally well-preserved ceremonial site is called Ahu Nau Nau, and it was here that the eye of a moai, made of white coral limestone, was discovered in 1978.
