There are only two beaches on Easter Island, both located on the north coast: Ovahe - slightly smaller and less visited - and Anakena. But what makes Anakena Beach so special are the Moais, who also stand here, with their backs to the sea, on a stone platform called an Ahu. Some of them wear a headdress - called a "pukao" - made of red tuff rock containing iron oxide. This particularly well-preserved ceremonial site is called Ahu Nau Nau, and it was here that a moai's eye made of white coral limestone was found in 1978.
