About the brand and products
ANAKENA is the name of the most famous beach on Easter Island, which belongs to Chile. This beach with its imposing world-famous stone figures - the Moais - is not only the place where, according to legend, the story of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) began, but also the inspiration for the cosmetics brand Anakena - Natural Cosmetics.
Of this dream place with its magical charm that transmits the mystique of this "jewel" of the Pacific, our brand wants to be a worthy ambassador.

Yes, our products comply with the guidelines of natural cosmetics and are therefore marked with the international natural cosmetics seal ECOCERT / COSMOS NATURAL and are manufactured according to the guidelines of Ecocert. You can learn more about this here: https://www.anakena.de/sortiment/zertifizierungen/
COSMOS is a European standard for natural cosmetics that was agreed upon by five national standard setters in 2010. They include ECOCERT, headquartered in France, and also the German industry association BDIH with its seal for controlled natural cosmetics. The COSMOS standard pursues the following goals:
- Use of ingredients from renewable raw materials
- Promote the use of ingredients from organic agriculture
- Use of environmentally friendly manufacturing and production processes that are not harmful to health
- Incorporating and expanding the concept of "green chemicals".
Not allowed are:
- genetically derived ingredients
- as well as animal testing.
COSMOS natural cosmetics consists of raw materials of natural origin, which were produced with physical or gentle chemical processes. If the organic content of the product is at least 20% and 95% of the physically processed plant raw materials are also organic, the COSMOS ORGANIC logo may appear on the labels. Otherwise it is called COSMOS NATURAL, in each case in addition to the logo of the national association. Anakena holds the ECOCERT - COSMOS NATURAL seal.
Further information can be found at https://cosmos-standard.org
The COSMOS Standard for natural and organic cosmetics was founded by the five largest certification companies in Europe:
- from Germany the BDIH
- from Italy ICEA
- from Great Britain the Soil Association
- and from France Ecocert and Cosmebio
The joint development of the criteria started already in 2002. In 2010, the "COSMOS Non-Profit Organization" was founded and the COSMOS Standard was published. Since January 2017, all new product developments of certified natural cosmetics are no longer certified by all five certifiers according to their own previous standards, but exclusively according to the COSMOS Standard.
The COSMOS standard thus combines the expertise and common guidelines of the five most important European certifiers in the organic and natural cosmetics sector.

All our products are vegan, with the exception of our face cream and body lotion, which contain beeswax.
Monoï de Tahiti oil Anakena is produced according to a traditional and original process in Tahiti and bears the seal of origin "Appellation d'Origine". It arrives in France by container ship, where it is bottled in glass bottles, and then trucked to our warehouse in Germany (near Munich).
The formulas of the products manufactured in Germany - face cream, body lotion and shower gel Skin & Hair - were exclusively developed for us according to our specifications over months of work, and are manufactured in Germany with some unique original ingredients from Tahiti in compliance with the highest quality and sustainability standards. All our products carry the ECOCERT-COSMOS Seal for certified natural cosmetics.
Our contract manufacturers in Tahiti, France and Germany have the international COSMOS-ECOCERT certifications, which allows them to produce certified natural cosmetics.
To select the manufacturers, I (Petra, founder of Anakena) have traveled to Tahiti and France, I have been to the contract manufacturer in Germany many times, although at the time of the development of the products I lived mainly on Easter Island, and was only in Germany between 6 weeks and 3 months per year. I am very happy to work with these excellent and reliable manufacturers in the three countries.
No, no ingredients come from Easter Island. Easter Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, two-thirds of the island is a national park, only about 7,500 people live there, there are no traffic lights, for example, and, last but not least, there is no infrastructure to produce cosmetic ingredients and raw materials under the required legal guidelines. Tahiti (belonging to French Polynesia), the neighbor of Easter Island just under 4000 kilometers away, is already more developed, and has been active in the cosmetics industry for decades - especially through the production of Monoï - which makes a delivery from Tahiti of our South Pacific ingredients the first choice.
The cosmetics brand ANAKENA was born on Easter Island, where the Founder Petra Klimscha started with homemade natural cosmetics (soaps etc.), then grew the Brand in Chile. In 2018, Anakena was launched in Germany with pure natural cosmetics. The products sold in Europe are manufactured in Germany and France. The Monoï de Tahiti oil is produced according to the "Appellation d'Origine" (more info about the appellation of origin here: https://anakena.de/unser-sortiment/zertifizierungen/ ) is produced in Tahiti (French Polynesia), and comes by container ship to France, where it is bottled, and then comes to Anakena in Germany. For the face cream and body lotion Anakena, in addition to the monoï oil - which is also included in these products - we buy very special ingredients (such as roucou oil, papaya and pineapple extracts, etc.) in Tahiti, complementing the exclusive recipes of production in Germany. By producing the face cream, shower gel and body lotion in Germany, the CO2 footprint is kept as low as possible, but the special original ingredients from the South Seas are not renounced, giving authenticity to the brand Anakena.
We invite you to visit our Blog post about our origin story to read.
Our production facilities are located in Germany and France. For the face cream and body lotion Anakena, in addition to the monoi - which is also included in these products - the brand buys very special ingredients (such as roucou oil, papaya and pineapple extract, etc.) in Tahiti, complementing the exclusive recipes of production in Germany. By producing the face cream, shower gel and body lotion in Germany, the "CO2 footprint" is kept as low as possible, but the special original ingredients from the South Seas are not renounced, which gives the brand Anakena authenticity.
For the face cream Anakena, the body lotion and the shower gel skin & hair, an epicutaneous test was carried out at the company Dermatest GmbH in Münster.
The epicutaneous test - also called patch test - is used to find out whether a cosmetic product triggers a skin reaction. Thus, in addition to evaluating the ingredients, one gets a tolerability assessment of the final product. Every cosmetic product must also have a safety evaluation, and many safety evaluators require an epicutaneous test to be included in the evaluation. Thus, the epicutaneous test is a safeguard for manufacturers and a compatibility test for customers.
The epituncan test is therefore the detection of a primary irritant effect or a contact allergy (by provoking allergic skin reactions in already sensitized test subjects). Our products have received the award "very good". For more information please follow the link..: http://dermatest.de/leistungen/epikutantestungen
ANAKENA stands for an extremely demanding philosophy of authenticity, purity and health. And this is noticeable everywhere from the selection of raw materials to the extraction and manufacturing processes. ANAKENA combines organic active ingredients with traditional Beatuy knowledge to create innovative and skin-friendly beauty care. Our range is characterized by particularly high skin compatibility.
Our products are made with fresh active ingredients and should be stored in a cool, dark place without direct sunlight and excessive heat. The products should be free from water getting into the bottles and jars, as this may cause contamination and affect the effectiveness of the product.
INCI means INTERNATIONAL NOMENCLATURE FOR COSMETIC INGREDIENTS. On every cosmetic product - whether cream, shampoo, soap or makeup - the INCs, i.e. all ingredients of the product, must be declared.
The INCIs (ingredients) of our products can be found at the following links: https://www.anakena.de/zutaten/ and https://anakena.de/online-shop/ if you click on the product in each case and then again in the lower area under the tab "Ingredients".
The ingredients of our products - the so-called INCIs - are listed on our website in the section Ingredientsas well as on the respective product pages on our website in the online store and on the product packaging.
Anakena is 100% "cruelty free", which means that we, as a manufacturer, do not conduct or have conducted any animal testing on our products and ingredients.
Animal testing has been banned in the European Union since March 2013.
We do not export our products to countries where animal testing is required for import and marketing.
Note: This is not "advertising with self-evident facts" but answering and clarifying questions asked by many customers.
All Anakena products are free of parabens, PEGs, silicones, mineral oils and other "critical" chemical substances.
Anakena cosmetics do not contain plastic particles or so-called liquid plastic such as acrylates, which is often used as a thickener in cosmetics.
Before first use, please "pump on" a few times before the cream comes out of the valve. Once pumped, it will work "in a jiffy".
By the way, this container - not only because of its handy format - is excellent for cosmetic products, avoiding constant contact between the cream and fingers (which is the case with a conventional jar).
Our products are basically suitable for all skin types.
Yes! The Monoï de Tahiti oil is therefore deliberately made of glass, as this can be disposed of and recycled via used glass collection systems. In Germany, the plastic bottles of our shower gel, body lotion and face cream can be disposed of in the plastic recycling container or also via the yellow bag or yellow garbage can into the plastic recycling system. The folding box of our face cream can be disposed of and recycled in the waste paper.
Our products have no package inserts, as we deliberately avoid paper product information in the interests of the environment.

Monoï de Tahiti
Monoï de Tahiti is a macerate of Tiare flowers (Gardenia tahitensis) in refined coconut oil (Coprah) made in Tahiti. The fresh Tiare Tahiti flower buds are immersed in coprah oil for 12 days with a minimum concentration of 12 flowers per liter, using a special method of enfleurage. After this time, the macerate is allowed to settle for 24 hours. It is then filtered, purified and a natural antioxidant (tocopherol solution) is added.

Compared to more domestic oils - such as olive oil - our monoï oil, which consists mainly of coconut oil, has a slightly higher melting point. Therefore, it is still solid at room temperature and must first be warmed to about 24°C before use. Simply place the bottle in warm water for a few minutes and the oil is ready again for your beauty and massage applications.
By the way, in each bottle there is a Gardenia Tahitensis flower, also called Tiare Tahiti.

as a "certificate of authenticity" that the Anakena Monoi oil is an original macerate, because the flowers are soaked in coconut oil for about 12 days, so that the dreamlike scent and the great properties of the original Gardenia taitensis flower are "captured" in the coconut oil, and the incomparable Monoii de Tahiti Anakena is created.

This is the first guarantee of origin seal created for a cosmetic product. Such seals of confirmation of origin (register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications) are otherwise more familiar from the food sector, such as Nuremberg gingerbread, champagne, Camembert de Normandie, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, etc.
Monoï de Tahiti is the first cosmetic product to receive a designation of origin. This label certifies the quality of its manufacture, the selection and Polynesian origin of its ingredients. This is by no means a seal that only Anakena products carry, but rather a designation of origin for all Monoï de Tahiti manufactured in French Polynesia according to the rules of the seal.
"Appellation d'Origine" - Rules of use
The exceptional characteristics of Monoï de Tahiti were officially recognized in April 1992 by the Denomination of Origin and became a guarantee of authenticity and quality. This distinction is limited to products produced in French Polynesia according to local and constantly verified manufacturing processes: Gardenia tahitensis (flower of Polynesia, also called Tiare Tahiti) is soaked in refined coconut oil. The guarantee resulting from this initiative has contributed to the fact that today 90 % of monoï comply with current legislation.
The label of the product must indicate the percentage of Monoï de Tahiti, as well as be stamped with the "Appellation d'Origine" (guarantee origin stamp) - which is of course the case with us.
