When you look at our logo, you immediately see the features of one of the world's most famous sculptures: a Moai from the Easter Island. But why did we at Anakena - Natural Cosmetics decide to incorporate this iconic stone statue into our brand? The answer lies in our origin story and a deep connection to a place of mysticism and natural beauty.
Easter Island: a remote paradise in the Pacific
Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui is one of the most remote inhabited places on earth. It is located in the middle of the South Pacific, 4251 km from Tahiti and with Pitcairn Island as the nearest inhabited island at a distance of 2078 kilometers. This small island with just under 8,000 inhabitants now belongs to Chile after it was annexed by Chile on September 9, 1888.
It was here, in this isolated part of the world, that our first Anakena products were created. Rapa Nui is home to almost 1000 monumental stone statues - the Moai - like silent sentinels over the landscape. These colossal sculptures, which were created between 400 and 1200 AD, are far more than just impressive works of art or tourist attractions.
The spiritual significance of the Moai
According to the Rapa Nui, the Moai embody "the living face of the ancestors". They probably represent famous chieftains - the ariki - or revered ancestors. On ceremonial platforms, the so-called ahuThey looked out over the villages and protected their people with their mana - the spiritual power they have inherited from their ancestors.
Despite extensive research, many of the Moai's secrets remain unsolved. What is clear, however, is that they stand for protection, ancestor worship and the transmission of wisdom across the generations.
The name of our brand comes from the Anakena Bayone of the most magical places on Rapa Nui. Here, where white coral sand and turquoise waters combine with the mystical presence of the moai, history and natural beauty come together in a unique way.
Why a Moai in our logo?
For us at Anakena - Natural Cosmetics, the Moai in our logo is a symbol of respect and connection to our place of origin. As our cosmetics brand originated on Easter Island, we made a conscious decision to include one of the mystical moai in our logo.
We see this as a respectful recognition of the rich culture of Rapa Nui and its indigenous people. Our logo is a tribute to the protective spirit and ancestral wisdom that these impressive statues have embodied for centuries.
The moai in our logo stands for the values that characterize our brand: Respect for nature and cultural traditions, protecting and preserving what is precious, and passing on knowledge and wisdom. In a world that is spinning ever faster, the moai remind us that some things remain constant and powerful - just like the connection between our brand and this extraordinary and unique place in the Pacific.
