The Tiare Tahiti flower and its secret
Monoï de Tahiti is more than just a delicately scented oil for the skin and hair - behind the small blossom in the golden oil lies a long tradition from the South Seas. In this article, you will find out what makes the Tiare Tahiti flower so special, how it enhances coconut oil and why Monoï de Tahiti Anakena is considered a genuine natural product from Tahiti.
If you are buying a bottle for the first time Monoï de Tahiti Anakena You will notice it immediately: there is a small flower floating in the golden oil. Not a decorative element, but a clear sign of quality. It is a Tiare Tahiti flower (Gardenia tahitensis) - and this is what makes our Monoï de Tahiti so special.

The Tiare Tahiti - soul of the South Seas
The Tiare Tahiti, Gardenia tahitensis, is the national flower of French Polynesia and a symbol of Tahiti and its islands. Its white, star-shaped petals exude an unmistakable, jasmine-like fragrance - soft, exotic, unforgettable.
For the inhabitants of the South Sea islands, the tiare is much more than just a flower: it is a medicinal plant, an ornament and a deep cultural symbol all in one. Pinned behind the ear, it follows a precise ritual: to the right means the heart is free - to the left, behind the heart, that the person is already taken. Worn as a necklace or flower crown, it greets new arrivals and gives a warm feeling of welcome.
It has been used medicinally for generations - in infusions for migraines and insect bites, in baths for wound care and to protect against the cold. Its essential oils give it antiseptic properties, while its salicylic acid derivatives have a calming and cleansing effect - particularly valuable for sensitive skin.
How the tiare flower gets into the coconut oil - the enfleurage process
The key to the production of authentic Monoï de Tahiti lies in a traditional maceration process that takes place exclusively in French Polynesia and is strictly regulated by the Appellation d'Origine decree of April 1, 1992. You can find more background information on this in our article on Monoï de Tahiti - a versatile miracle oil.

Tiare flowers are harvested early in the morning from around 5 a.m. in the bud stage on plantations - shortly before they fully open. They must be processed the following day at the latest, as otherwise their valuable properties quickly disappear. Carefully wrapped in leaves, they retain their freshness and fragrance until they are processed.
The fresh blossoms are then immersed in refined coconut oil (Coprah) - at room temperature, without the addition of heat. At least 12 blossoms per liter of oil, for at least 12 days. During this time, the flowers completely release their unmistakable fragrance and moisturizing and nourishing properties into the oil.
After maceration, the oil rests for 24 hours, is then filtered, purified and mixed with a natural antioxidant (tocopherol solution). The result is authentic Monoï de Tahiti oil - a product that you can enjoy as a Monoï de Tahiti Anakena in our Online store find.

A little tip: The coconut oil in Monoï de Tahiti can become solid or appear cloudy at temperatures below around 24°C. In this case, simply place the bottle in warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes - the oil will become clear and liquid again and can be used as usual.

The Appellation d'Origine seal: a guarantee of authenticity
In the 1980s, the market was dominated by „monoï“ products from Asia or other regions - without real tiare flower, without Polynesian coconut oil and without traditional production. This changed with the French decree of April 1, 1992, which made Monoï de Tahiti the first Cosmetics denomination (Appellation d'Origine) the world.
Since then, only those products that are made exclusively in French Polynesia from tiare flowers and coconut oil according to the established, traditional processes have been allowed to call themselves „Monoï de Tahiti“. This seal is printed on the back of each bottle Monoï de Tahiti Anakena is printed on the label - visible proof of origin, quality and loyalty to tradition.

Coconut oil - the white gold of Tahiti
The foundation of the Monoï is another treasure of the islands: refined coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), extracted from the dried coconuts of the coconut palm, the „tree of life“ in Polynesian culture. The oil is rich in essential fatty acids, has a light texture and is naturally nourishing and moisturizing - the ideal base for absorbing and preserving the properties of the Tiare flower.
The Tiare Tahiti is an endemic plant of the French Polynesia, which hardly produces any seeds and can only survive through targeted care and propagation by humans. It prefers to grow in coralline soils, flowers all year round - with its main flowering period from September to April - and bears two to ten flowers per plant every day. This rarity and the laborious harvesting process make it a particularly valuable raw material - and increase the importance of the genuine Monoï de Tahiti.
